Feast of the Assumption 2020
Today marks another major festival in the Church calendar: the Feast of the Assumption, that moment when Mary, the Mother of God, is taken up into Heaven.
Mary holds a special place in and for the Church, given the very specific and crucial role she plays. This morning’s Gospel reading is the Magnificat: Mary’s hymn of praise to God. Here, Mary gives thanks for all of the good things that God has done and for the many blessings God has given her and those who are needy, forgotten and outcast. Let’s not forget here that Mary is young and vulnerable, full of doubts and fears. Being chosen as the Mother of God’s Son must have seemed a daunting prospect, but she nevertheless accepts the task set before her.
As we continue to live in this very different world with all of its new rules and expectations, no one would blame us if at times we perhaps felt vulnerable or had doubts and fears. One thing which has truly inspired me over these last few months (and we don’t only see it here but all over the world), are the many examples of love and humanity shown by so many to those in need around them. I think this stems from a willingness to do anything we can to relieve suffering and help make life manageable for those who struggle.
Just as Mary said “yes” to God’s task for her, we can say “yes” to God through the love and care we show to one another in challenging times, continuing on our journey with God through a life of service.
Today, let us remember and give thanks for Mary on the day we recall her being taken up into Heaven, and remember the special place she holds in the Church. In the midst of these challenging times, we would do well to look at the example of Mary, who, despite her fears, accepted all that was in front of her.
I know different sets of circumstances present unique challenges and difficulties for each of us – after all, we are unique. But let us all be strong in our faith, and with Mary and Our Lord to guide and help us, may we find the strength to work through these most difficult of times, continuing to offer our lives in service to God.
AMEN
