Revd Michael Redman

Nearly 20 years ago, Michael worshipped at St Barnabas Bethnal Green during a placement before he was ordained. Two years ago, he rejoined St Barnabas as curate. But if truth be told, he never went away, often worshipping in the church on his Sunday off and when the Covid restrictions started to be relaxed.

Michael was a lawyer for 35 years, practising in environmental and planning law. Latterly, he worked nearby in Canary Wharf in one of the big law firms where he was small fry. When he wasn’t spending inordinately long hours in the office, he used to play for the worst rugby side in North London, Hampstead Hoggs. Later, he took up refereeing and was told by players and spectators alike that he needed new spectacles. He now watches rugby on the sidelines where he calls the decisions 100 per cent right.

Michael was ordained 18 years ago and served at St Paul’s Church, North Marylebone (behind Marylebone Station). His ministry there lasted 13 years. During this time, he developed an interest in interfaith relations, which he studied at Heythrop College in Kensington. He went on to study Buddhism and Jainism at SOAS. He was interfaith adviser for some time in the central London area. Michael is a member of the World Congress of Faiths.

Michael is often seen at Lord’s and The Oval watching cricket. He’s also a cricket umpire at Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club. He may be found absent without leave during test matches in London.
